- In my Bachelor’s Thesis in Mathematics, I delve into hematopoiesis, the complex process of blood cell production in the body.
- I find it intriguing how certain diseases like leukemia disrupt this normally balanced system by triggering intermittent white blood cell production, irrespective of the body’s needs.
- Overall, these diseases contrast starkly with the normally non-cyclical production of blood cells. They show how unexpected disruptions can hit the body’s processes.
What Is Hematopoiesis?
For my bachelor’s thesis in mathematics, I’m exploring hematopoiesis—the processes behind blood cell production in the body.
According to the National Cancer Institute’s SEER training program, hematopoiesis is the continuous process that replenishes blood cells from hematopoietic stem cells. According to Orkin and Zon (2008), self-renewing stem cells in the bone marrow sustain the entire blood system.
Which Diseases Work in Reverse?
Meanwhile, what’s fascinating is the presence of diseases that work in the opposite direction. Notably, rather than affecting systems usually in balance, these conditions disrupt processes that are normally not cyclical.
Why Is Leukemia a Dynamical Disease?
Take leukemia, for example. In this condition, the body produces white blood cells periodically, regardless of its needs.
According to Colijn and Mackey (2005), periodic chronic myelogenous leukemia is a dynamical disease: white blood cell counts oscillate with a regular period. In fact, according to Fortin and Mackey (1999), those cycles run between 37 and 83 days.
